Theth – Valbonë: internet on the trail (eSIM, offline maps, safety)
Coverage in the Albanian Alps is a bonus, not a guarantee. Villages work; the trail often doesn’t. Prep eSIM before departure, download offline maps, and set an SOS plan.
Quick coverage snapshot (field tests 2025)
Updated: Jan 2026 · Tests: Jul 2025
- Theth village: Vodafone 4G (very good); ALBtelecom (good); One (limited).
- Theth–Valbonë trail: no signal on the pass; brief 3G/4G near shelters.
- Valbonë village: Vodafone 3G/4G (good); slower uploads in the evenings.
Pre-trip prep
- Install Albania eSIM (Vodafone) at home; keep home‑SIM roaming off.
- Download offline Google Maps, Maps.me, and weather + the Theth–Valbonë trail.
- Carry a 10k–20k mAh power bank; use airplane mode on ascents, enable data in villages only.
- Agree on an SMS/WhatsApp check‑in time with your guesthouse in the valley.
Coverage: Theth, trail, Valbonë
- Theth village: Vodafone 4G stable in the center; 15–25 Mbps down, 5–10 Mbps up. Guesthouse Wi‑Fi can be unstable.
- Theth–Valbonë trail: No coverage on the ascent. Short 3G/4G windows near shelters (Ragu, Qafa e Valbonës) – enough for text.
- Valbonë village: Vodafone 3G/4G; 10–20 Mbps down, 3–8 Mbps up. Evening slowdowns but good enough to book transport.
Safety and SOS
- Tell your guesthouse your expected descent time; no contact = they start checking.
- Download offline maps and a GPS track; in fog it’s easy to drift off trail.
- Airplane mode on ascents saves battery and avoids endless network search.
- No signal on the pass—do not rely on live tracking.
Mountain internet without roaming
Albania eSIM on Vodafone works in Theth/Valbonë and all approach routes. Activate before you go—roaming is pricey and unreliable.
